Join the first annual OUR GOOD RIVER Climate Change Parade! As a celebration of life on the edge of great loss and destruction, the parade will take place on the Summer Solstice (Tuesday, June 21) at 5:30 pm, marching down corridors where thousands of buffalo once crossed the Ohio River. “Ohio'' comes from a Seneca word meaning “Good River,” today the Ohio is one of the most polluted bodies of water in the world. As a unifying body of our good air, good soil, good food, and good cultures, Our Good River needs our care and protection!
There will be Monarchs and other puppets and costumes available for marchers of all ages and sizes, but we encourage groups to come up with banners, costumes, or color coordinations that represent the environmental issue that resonates most deeply with you. For example: a group focused on air pollution could make cardboard smog clouds to carry, or dress as smokestacks. A family might choose an endangered plant or animal species to represent (running buffalo clover? Grey Bat? It's up to you!). Costumes not required!
Schedule of events:
5:15pm-5:30pm, assemble at the Belvedere for a puppet play by Squallis Puppeteers and friends
6:00pm: The parade begins! We will march down a portion of the historic bison trail to Breonna Square Park and back again.
7:00pm: The parade concludes with music on the belvedere
Partners on the project include Squallis Puppeteers, River City Drum Corp, Mighty Shades of Ebony, the Marigold Marching Band, Sierra Club Louisville, Kentucky Waterways Alliance, and a cadre of brilliant local artists and activists.
